Hanoi is a bustling city characterized by its narrow streets and alleyways, with the exception of the stretch from the airport to the city, where wide roads and open spaces reign. Nevertheless, Hanoi has managed to retain its charm and elegance, which emanates from its old-world allure and breathtaking colonial architecture. Countless lakes and parks offer ideal spots to unwind, as the serenity of the surroundings creates a tranquil atmosphere. The streets are also adorned with an array of eateries serving delectable local cuisine and shops where haggling is the norm, enabling you to acquire desired products at your desired price. The locals are extremely amicable, although evenings witness massive traffic congestions on the streets.

During my time in Hanoi, I had the opportunity to visit:

Ho Chi Minh Mausoleum – This revered site serves as the final resting place of the iconic Vietnamese leader, affectionately known as Uncle Ho. Encased in an air-conditioned glass casket, his body dons his military attire, safeguarded by a Military Guard. The Mausoleum is encompassed by meticulously maintained gardens and manicured lawns, pleasing to the eye. Such was the admiration for this esteemed leader that multitudes of visitors flock to the Mausoleum to pay their respects.

This is a petite and tranquil city renowned for its splendid architectural wonders, pagodas, and regal resting places. I explored the Minh Mang Tomb, Khai Dinh Tomb, Tu Duc Tomb, The Citadel, as well as the villages specialized in crafting Conical Hats and making Incense. The following day, I embarked on a 5-hour drive to Hoi An via Danang. Along the journey, we made a stop at the Lang Co Beach, and then the road wound its way up to the breathtaking Hai Van pass, nestled amidst the mountain peaks overlooking the coastal magnificence. This scenic pass attracts hoards of tourists. Suddenly, the temperature here dropped dramatically to 8 degrees, prompting me to make a swift escape.

We continued our trip to visit the Marble Mountains, whose pinnacle symbolizes the five fundamental elements of the universe. Under the blaze of the sun, I acquired an entrance ticket and commenced my ascent of the “Marble Mountain”. It was an arduous climb that took 45 minutes to reach the cave atop the mountain. Walking alongside fellow travelers, predominantly Scandinavians and Canadians, brought to mind the frequently uttered expression as we ventured higher into the mountains – “let the winds blow”. The humidity weighed heavily on climbers, with today being no exception. Along the way, we also visited a marble factory where various finished products made of marble, Onyx, Crystal, and Amethyst were proudly exhibited for global export. Continuing our journey, we passed through Danang, an impeccably organized city that harmoniously blends the old and the new. Skyscrapers embrace the coastline, while boulevards, splendid beaches, and captivating roads enhance its allure. Absolutely fantastic! By evening, we finally arrived in Hoi An.

Days of Splendor in Hoi An:

The Enchantment of Hoi An:

I rested overnight at an outstanding resort situated by the riverside. The following morning, we embarked on a trip to My Son, the sacred land of the mighty Champa kingdom, constructed between the 4th and 14th centuries AD. Recognized as a UNESCO heritage site, it was unexpectedly discovered in the 18th century hidden within a dense forested area. To reach this remarkable site, one must undertake a two-hour walk. Along the way, remnants of bomb craters, testimony to the 1968 Vietnam War, caused by the relentless bombing by US B 52 bombers targeting Viet Minh soldiers who sought refuge there, come into view. The temple complex boasts intricate carvings depicting Shiva, Parvathi, Vishnu, Brahma, and Ganesha. It is undoubtedly a must-see for anyone visiting this corner of the world. The subsequent day was dedicated to exploring Hoi An, a vivacious, vibrant town that pulsates with color and activity, allowing for revelry that stretches well into the early morning hours. The market in Hoi An is unparalleled in terms of entertainment, revelry, and shopping options. What sets it apart is the way the crowd, both young and not-so-young, carries themselves with regal elegance as if adorned for a grand occasion. Later on, I set aside some time in the evening to witness a captivating Vietnamese Cooking demonstration held in a lively and vivid market area of Hoi An. There, I experimented with the preparation of six exotic dishes – an experience beyond compare!

After thoroughly exploring the northern and central regions of Vietnam and forming meaningful connections with both locals and fellow travelers, it was time to bid farewell to everyone and depart for Hoi An from Danang Airport the following day, bright and early at 6 AM. My next destination was the vibrant city of Saigon in the south, which is now known as Ho Chi Minh City.

Ho Chi Minh City

Referred to as Saigon by many locals, this city serves as the epicenter of commerce, finance, culture, and tourism in Vietnam. Unlike its northern counterpart, Hanoi, this bustling metropolis is characterized by an abundance of bicycles and motorbikes. Embarking on a city tour, we had the opportunity to visit the Reunification Palace, once the official residence of the President of South Vietnam until April 1975. In close proximity to the palace, remarkable French colonial structures such as Notre Dame Cathedral and the historic Saigon Post Office can be admired. Continuing our exploration, we paid a visit to the Jade Emperor Pagoda and the poignant War Remnants Museum before immersing ourselves in the vibrant atmosphere of Ben Thanh Market, where a true glimpse of local life unfolds.

The following day, we departed from the bustling chaos of Ho Chi Minh City and embarked on a journey to My Tho, situated on the left bank of the mighty Mekong River. Our first mode of transportation was a traditional sampan, as we navigated gracefully along the river, encircling the enchanting quartet of islands: Dragon, Unicorn, Phoenix, and Tortoise. Our first stop was at the ethereal Unicorn Island, where we strolled through its picturesque countryside lanes, indulging in the sights and aromas of orchards adorned with tropical fruits. Serenaded by the harmonious melodies of folk songs performed by the local inhabitants, we delved deeper into the island’s heart.

Along the way, we immersed ourselves in the local way of life, visiting family-owned businesses, including a vibrant honeybee farm where we savored the sweetness of honey tea. Our journey led us to a remarkable coconut candy workshop, where we witnessed the intricate craftsmanship involved in creating this delectable treat.

After a satisfying lunch, we embarked on a delightful cycling excursion around the charming Tan Thach village, providing us with a genuine glimpse into the daily lives of the local villagers in the Mekong Delta. For those unable to partake in the cycling adventure, comfortable hammocks were thoughtfully arranged, inviting relaxation amidst the refreshing breeze. As we bid farewell to this idyllic village, we retraced our steps back to Ho Chi Minh City. However, before concluding our day’s exploration, we made a captivating detour to the acclaimed Lacquer Painting Factory, nestled approximately 12km outside the city limits. The awe-inspiring skills showcased by the artists at this establishment left an indelible impression on our hearts and minds.

During our time in Ho Chi Minh City, we also dedicated a poignant visit to the “Vietnam War Remnants” Museum. This poignant museum provided a deep revelation of the immense destruction and devastation inflicted upon Vietnam during the turbulent years of the late 1960s and early 1970s. The scars of this tumultuous era are still visible throughout the country, leaving an indelible mark.

The drive from Ho Chi Minh City to My Tho spans over three long hours, offering ample time to soak in the scenic beauty of the surrounding landscapes.

Our exploration continued as we made our way to Tay Ninh, where the headquarters of the Cao Dai sect awaited us. This religious movement, established in 1923, boasts a staggering membership of over two million individuals. Departing from Ho Chi Minh City, we embarked on a 200-kilometer journey to Tay Ninh, eager to witness the splendor of the ornate Cao Dai temple and partake in the extraordinary mid-day service. The hall was filled with devotees of the sect, clad in vibrant robes that symbolized the unique blend of Confucianism, Taoism, and Buddhism embraced by the Cao Dai community.

Following this enlightening experience, we set out to explore the renowned War Zone, specifically the awe-inspiring Cu Chi Tunnels. These intricate underground passageways were masterfully constructed by Vietnamese fighters during their arduous struggle for independence. Serving as a multifaceted hub, the tunnels not only housed hospitals but also provided accommodation and educational facilities, serving as a formidable military base for the Viet Cong during the conflict with the United States.

Next on our itinerary was a flight to Phnom Penh, the captivating capital of Cambodia. There, I had the opportunity to delve into the depths of history and culture, beginning with a visit to the mystical jungle-clad temple of Ta Prohm. Further explorations led me to Banteay Kdei, Sra Srong, Ta Leo, Thommanon, and Chau Say Tevado. Embracing the grand circuit, I marveled at the architectural wonders of Preah Khan, Kravan, Neak Pean, Krol Ko, Ta Som, East Mebon, and Pre Rup Temples. The pinnacle of my journey was a challenging ascent up a densely forested hill to Bakheng Hill, where a breathtaking panorama of Siem Reap’s majestic sandstone monuments unfolded before me, accompanied by a mesmerizing sunset. From this vantage point, I caught glimpses of diligent fishermen conducting their laborious work. Additionally, I had the pleasure of immersing myself in the rich heritage of the region by visiting the mesmerizing Royal Palace, the revered Silver Pagoda, and the sacred Wat Phnom. Situated at the convergence of the Siem Reap, Mekong, and Tonle Sap rivers, Phnom Penh truly captivated my senses.

I had the opportunity to explore the renowned Angkor Wat temple, an esteemed UNESCO World Heritage site. This architectural marvel is truly awe-inspiring, captivating your gaze with its sheer magnificence. Angkor served as the capital of the Khmer Empire from 802 AD to 1350 AD, and the construction of the temple took place in the 13th century. Its walls are adorned with intricate engravings and etchings of Hindu deities, such as Shiva, Parvati, Ganesh, Arjun, Ram, Bramha, Hanuman, and Ravan. The presence of Shivalinga is evident at almost every entrance, while the walls beautifully depict the stories of Ramayana and Mahabharata. As Buddhism gradually replaced Hinduism around the 14th century, Buddha statues began to replace many of the Hindu deities. To truly experience the grandeur of this temple, one must be physically fit and prepared to embark on a four-hour journey, traversing approximately 100 steep steps, all under the scorching sun. However, the reward is worth every effort. I also made sure to visit the significant adjacent sites, including Bayon Temple, Royal Enclosures, Phimesnakas, Elephant Terrace, and the Terrace of the Leper King.
