Neelakurinji, scientifically known as ‘Strobilanthes Kunthiana’, is a purplish blue flower that blooms and adds color to the hills of Munnar once every 12 years. In Munnar, the Neelakurinji flower season attracts numerous tourists who come to admire the beauty of the blue hills. This year, an estimated eight lakh people are expected to visit the town during these four months, prompting the Kerala government to make extensive arrangements.

With the anticipation of such a large number of tourists visiting Munnar during these four months, Pinarayi Vijayan, the Chief Minister of the state, stated that, “The government is preparing to offer improved facilities for tourists and take necessary precautions to preserve the National Park.”

The Eravikulam National Park, located 8 km from the town of Munnar, is a prominent destination for witnessing the 40 rare varieties during the Neelakurinji flowering season. To protect this park and ensure a splendid experience for visitors, the government plans to implement strict measures against plastic bottles and bags, repair roads, provide more sanitation facilities, and regulate street vendors.
